Summary: Thatcher’s Tools

Key dates:

The thatcher’s tools included a mallet, a fork, a rake and a needle. The first layer of thatch was sewn with the needle and in coastal areas the outer layer was often secured by hay ropes that were weighted with stones at the end. Thatchers only became specialised craftsmen when farmers were more prosperous and wanted better roofing.
