In spite of the growth of Belfast (which really accelerated in the 2nd half of the 19th century) the pace of urbanisation in Ireland was slow. By 1850 only 14% of the population lived in towns. In Britain there was much more industrialisation and the towns attracted huge numbers of people seeking work in the new factories.
