Key dates:

In rural parts of Ireland there was a strong belief in ‘alternative medicine’. Certain individuals were believed to have special gifts and they treated a variety of ailments with special herbal concoctions or by calling for spiritual help. Frequently these rituals involved the use of a lighted candle which was used to make the sign of the cross.
