Summary: Woodcuts

Key dates:

Art and culture needed new inspiration and new practitioners after the dissolution of the monasteries. One form of art that developed at this time was woodcutting. The best example of this was the work of John Derrick whose book Images of Irelande was published in 1581. The pictures are well drawn and are mainly of the campaign of Sir Henry Sidney. These provide some of the earliest visual records of Irish history and landscape.
