Summary: Illuminated Manuscripts

Key dates:

From the 8th century, the influence of Irish missionary activity into Scotland and England was reflected in Irish illuminated manuscripts. The Book of Kells was not produced until almost a century after the Book of Durrow and, in that intervening period, many other books were produced. One of these was the Book of Dimma. This is cruder in style than Durrow and it is colourful and vigorous. Another example from this period is the Book of St Chad, also known as the Lindisfarne Gospels.
