Summary: Penal Laws

Key dates:

The purpose of these laws was to put Catholics into an inferior position. These were very difficult to enforce. Mass was often celebrated in the open air or in private houses. There were chapels in Dublin but these were situated mainly in back streets. Clerical students had to go to the continent for their education and, as a result, Irish Colleges were established abroad.

The Irish College, Rome was founded on January 1st 1628 by the Irish Franciscan, Fr. Luke Wadding.
