Summary: Towns

Key dates:

Towns had been rare in Ireland before the Plantations. The coming of the English and the fact that many of the planters felt insecure meant that many of these towns, such as Londonderry, had town walls. Life within the walls lost its medieval character. Many of the houses were substantial and were made of stone, although timber was the most common building material.
