Summary: Schools

Key dates:

Some schools were set up with very little money as the schoolmaster rented or built a small hut which became the school room. For others, various religious and charitable organisations sponsored the building and running of schools. Some schools were seminaries for the priesthood. Their influence was limited and, by 1790, only 52% of males and 31% of females could read or write.
