Summary: hospitals

Key dates:

Disease was common and in Dublin many hospitals were established. With limited knowledge of infection, hospitals often killed rather than cured people. In the provinces county infirmaries began to appear. These tended to be very small. An estate agent described the new hospital in Omagh in 1767: I went through the several apartments, and enquired at the patients, in what manner they were treated; they declared they were regularly attended by the surgeon and that they wanted for nothing, that they believed was fitt for themthere has been 12 patients turned out, 10 of them recovered anf two deemed incurable; there are 9 in the hospital, three of them to go out and four on the books to be admitted, as of last week”
