Summary: Toilets

Key dates:

The Normans built toilets in their castles. These were usually in the corners of towers and the waste fell into the ditch below. Sometimes clothes were hung in the toilet areas in the hope that the smell would keep the moths away. Because of this, the toilet was known as the garderobe which is the word from which we get the word wardrobe. On some occasions, attackers may have tried to enter a castle by sending someone up the wall through the toilet!
