Summary: O’Neill’s Castle

Key dates:

The O’Neills, who were an important Irish family, had their main castle at Dungannon. Their castle, unlike those of the Anglo Normans, had small round houses within its enclosure. These were thatched and seemed to lack chimneys. The old ring fort was still in use by these Irish lords who had resisted the new Norman fashions.
