Summary: Whiteboys’ Song

Key dates:

The Whiteboys were a secret society in mid 18th century Ireland. They were groups of armed men wearing a white shirt who roamed the country at night punishing farmers who paid low wages or asked for too high a rent. Many ballads and songs were written about them such as The Gaol of Clonmel which is pictured.
