Summary: Fairy Thorn

Key dates:

‘Fairy Thorns’ were never dug up even if, like in this photograph, they used up valuable land. Local custom reinforced the belief that removing a fairy thorn would bring bad luck. It was thought that anyone who cut down a fairy thorn or ‘skeagh’ would meet an accident resulting in maiming for life.
