Summary: First Milk

Key dates:

Many small farmers kept one or two cows, sometimes sharing the accommodation with the family. It became a custom in many parts of Ulster to ensure that the first milking of a newly-calved cow was done into a vessel containing a silver and a copper coin. Not to have done so was considered unlucky.
