Summary: Iron Age Housing in General

Key dates:

The type of settlement most closely associated with the Iron Age people is the hill fort. Most of the Irish examples are very impressive field monuments, some covering many acres. Inland promontory forts such as those found in Counties Antrim and Kerry are imposing defensive sites. The very impressive fort of Dun Aengus on Inishmore in the Aran Islands is heavily defended although its purpose is unclear.
