This photograph shows a fine example of the dress commonly worn by the rural people of the Aran Islands, Co. Galway. The woman is wearing a long skirt with a tuck above the hem and a woollen jacket. Her short shawl is clearly visible. The man is wearing homespun trousers, common among the poor, and a sleeveless jacket with wide lapels. Both are wearing hand knit stockings.
