Summary: Cattle

Key dates:

In the second half of the l9th century there was a 60 per cent increase in cattle numbers in Ireland, which reflected the general shift in emphasis from arable to livestock farming. This led to the largescale importing of new breeds of cattle. For dairy farmers the shorthorn became the most popular breed. Those who concentrated on beef production favoured new breeds like the Aberdeen Angus, though the Galloway was popular with farmers in poor, upland areas.
