Summary: Blackheath House

Key dates:

Professional men such as doctors or lawyers lived in what were described as gentlemen’s residences. In the years before the First World War much of the cooking, cleaning and gardening in such houses would have been undertaken by domestic servants. This offered some prospect of employment for the young women of the area.
