Summary: Newspapers

Key dates:

A combination of increased literacy among the population and the revolution in transport brought about by the railways created a new opportunity for newspaper magnates. The Belfast News-Letter had been in existence since 1737, but it faced new competition at the end of the 19th century. The Belfast Evening Telegraph (established in 1870) and the Irish News (established in 1891) were both cheaper than the News-Letter. Very quickly the Telegraph with its province-wide distribution became the biggest selling daily in Ulster.
