Summary: Horse-drawn Tram

Key dates:

Before the end of the 19th century the omnibus had been replaced by the horse-drawn tram. Although laying the metal tracks required considerable money, the tramways were able to cut the price of fares. By reducing friction the metal tracks made it possible to pull heavier loads with fewer horses and, therefore, costs were reduced. By 1893 the Belfast Street Tramways Company had a fleet of 94 double-decker tramcars like the one in the photograph.
