Summary: Bicycles

Key dates:

The developments made to the bicycle at the end of the 19th century encouraged manufacturers to produce large quantities of bicycles. Gordon Brothers of Hillsborough in Co. Down were the most important local manufacturers. Their bicycles were distributed through cycle agents who opened up shops in almost every town and village in Ulster. The photograph shows the scene outside one of these cycle shops.
