Summary: Early Aeroplanes

Key dates:

A number of Ulster inventors including Harry Ferguson, the man who later developed the famous Ferguson tractor, built small aeroplanes which they tried out over short distances. In fact the first powered flight in Ireland was by Harry Ferguson in Co. Down. These occasions captured the public’s imagination and large crowds like this one at Ballyholme, Bangor, Co. Down turned out to see an aircraft in action. This photograph was taken in 1914.
