Summary: The Discovery of Potato Blight

Key dates:

This illustration captures the despair of rural people on discovering the potato blight. The lack of scientific knowledge about the causes of the blight obviously added to these feelings of doom. In August 1846 Fr. Matthew, travelling from Dublin to Cork, described how in many areas he saw wretched people seated on fences and ditches wailing bitterly (at) the destruction that had left them foodless.
