Summary: Pig Fair

Key dates:

Up to the 1840s pig fairs were a very common sight in most small Irish towns, but during the Famine pig numbers dropped by more than a half inside a few years. When hit by the potato failure, small farmers sold off (or killed) their pigs and did not have the money to restock.
